Fast Talk, Fast Action, and Fun at the Schroon Lions Club Auction

Some of the goodies up for grabs at the 2012 Schroon Lions Club Auction held at the Boat House each Sunday of thre Memorial day Weekend

Nothing gets the heart pumping like attending an auction -- whether your are bidding on an item or watching folks duke it out. And we can report first hand the experience is very exhilarating at the Schroon Lions Club annual auction.

We were in attendance last year -- where we picked up several bargains -- and watched two bidders REALLY bid up the red and blue Corona Beer Cooler, you can see in the above photo. (It went for over $400!!!)

2013 Schroon Lake Citizen Of The Year

Past winners are displayed on this plaque in the Chamber offices on Main Street

The more time we spend in greater Schroon, the more we realize how many good deeds get done in these parts by dedicated folks.

And each year the Schroon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce recognizes those efforts with their Citizen Of the Year Award.

And the deadline is fast approaching for you to nominate someone who you think deserves recognition. To be eligible to be nominated, you have to be a full time resident of Schroon, Severance, Paradox Lake or North Hudson.

Water cycle? We have never seen such a contraption until we spotted this postcard recently on Ebay.

We were kinda bummed that the caption on the back tells us nothing about this unique way to get around the lake. It reads:

"Word of Life Camp is in the northern part of picturesque Schroon Lake, opposite the town of Schroon Lake Village. Twenty two permanent buildings on this large island, formerly a millionaire’s estate, are surrounded by richly timbered woods, lawns and flower gardens".

A Helping Hand for Local Schroon Area Community Groups

Schroon Laker Ann Breen Metcalfe reminds us that there are thousands of dollars up for grabs from the Community Fund for the Gore Mountain Region.

The group will hand out $9,000 in grants to non-profit organizations in the towns of Schroon, Minerva, Chester, Horicon and Johnsburg in 2013. The money comes from a fund set up by a long time Gore area seasonal resident, Michael Ellis, who participated in a conference on the "how's" of community improvement organized by regional philanthropists and the Adirondack Community Trust. (ACT).

Shortly after The Community Fund for the Gore Mountain Region (CFGMR) was born. Michael wanted to make a positive difference to the area.
