Schroon Sparkles

Photos and story by Sharon Piper

Community gardeners and some Word of Life Bible Institute volunteers worked up a sweat getting the Community Garden ready for the season this passed Saturday.

With the big tree removed courtesy of Town Supervisor Mike Marnell, all the beds will enjoy favorable sunshine this year.

Diane Leah did a great job selling plants that were supplied by Green Thumb nursery to raise funds for the garden's 3rd season. All plots have been adopted again this year, and we have some new gardeners this time around.

Happy Saturday

It's Back: The Annual Community Garden Plant sale at 10am

It's just a week before Schroon's Opening Weekend -- and the Town is getting ready for the first wave of returning snow birds, second home owners, vacationers and visitors  -- with it's annual clean up day making sure this joint shines!

The Highway Clean Up begins at at 10 am all along Route 9 -- from the Narrows to Route 74. Folks from the Beautification committee will be out sprucing up the Town gardens, and those lucky enough to grab a bed at the town garden will be turning their soil and planting!

And those plants will most likely come from the huge plant sale at the garden, starting at 10am and going to 2pm.

Other weekend highlights: Dethrone Your Inner Drama Queen with the Bona Fie Butterflies - True North Yoga (518) 810-7871.

Throwback Thursday: 1937

From the Schroon Laker Collection

The year was 1937, the sun is shining and bathers of all shapes and sizes are taking advantage of some classic Schroon Lake Weather.

We recently picked up this original photograph, which comes from the "State of New York Conservation Department Bureau of State Publicity, Albany New York".

There are men, women and children on the beach and and to the far right of frame, what appears to be a wooden diving station of sorts. Some of the men have there bathing tops town -- that's right -- the style of swim suits for men in the 1930s had tops.

We are not to sure where the photo is taken from. If you have any clues, share them with us in comments.

Can You Sing, Strum, Hum or Play the Kazoo? Then Schroon Wants You!

The 2012 Opening Weekend performers, The Steven L. Smith Band

Mark Piper is a man of many talents. From singer, songwriter, guitarist, composer, drummer, runner, baker and inn keeper -- there's nothing he can't get done.

But he needs a little help in filling out the music line-up for the up coming Schroon Opening Weekend, where he is in charge of the Open Mic Stage, in the Town Park, at the Bandstand.

With funds tight, organizers decided to let area musicians and singers have the chance to show their stuff.

"We are still seeking musical, singing and choir acts for the weekend," Mark recently told us.
