Schroon's Throwback Thursday: When Main Street Had Two Cinemas

Take a tour down memory lane this week, courtesy of Laura Donaldson, long time Schroon Laker and owner of Rocky Acres B&B.

Laura shared this photo with us, from the time when her parents ran the famous John's Diner, in the early 1950s.

"The Golf station is where Stewart's is now, beyond that sign my parents ran 'John's Diner' in the early 50's Now it is the new building housing Upstate Insurance & the Higher Ground Coffee shop.

Schroon Lions Auction A Porsche: It's A Race To The Finish!

The annual Schroon Lions' Club Auction each Memorial day, always attracts some terrific bargains and a lot of attention from bidders. But this year it could be a race to the finish.

Up for grabs, going once, going twice, going down the Northway at a great rate of speed: a 1984 Porche 944!

That's right folks, that black beauty pictured above, is going under the auctioneer's hammer on Sunday, making last year's years fight over a Corona ice chest, seem a little like drinking a flat beer.

East Shore Schroon Lake News: Late May Edition

ESSLA (East Shore Schroon Lake Association), is rolling out the welcome mat for its returning members with its annual Pasta Gala on June  2nd. From Club President Jane Smith:

"Looking forward to our first-fund raiser/social/basket raffle/pasta dinner on June 2 (5:00-6:30 pm) at Jimbo’s on Brant Lake.   This dinner is a great way to see those you haven’t seen in awhile, talk about your winter and the start of our summer.  Anne Pieper is accepting reservations at apieper@frontiernet.net.  Please let Anne know if you are bringing a dessert.

Currently our lake stewards are at Paul Smith’s College being trained, our scouts are readying their duties, and we’re ready for the CSLAP water testing to begin.

A New School Bus and Budget For Schroon

Voters in Tuesday’s election approved the Schroon Lake Central School budget of $7.4 million.

Three hundred and 444 people voted and the budget was passed 200-144. A proposition to buy a new bus got the green light by a margin of 200-134 votes.

Incumbent School Board member Tina Armstrong was re-elected to the school board, defeating Bruce Murdock.

Armstrong, 49, ran on a platform to have the Schroon Lake Central School offers more programs to increase enrollment, she recently told the Post Star.
