Facebook “Meet Up” Leads To Arrest of Schroon Lake Sex Offender And Recovery of Missing Girl

A convicted rapist and his girlfriend -- who met a 15-year-old girl on line through Facebook -- has been arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, New York State police say.

Joshua E. Kearsley, 25, of Alder Meadow Road, was charged with a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the disappearance of a 15-year-old runaway from Whitehall.

The Roar of Dollars For Schroon Lake

From the roar of Harley and BMW engines, to the neatly lined up assortment of bikes along Main Street, there’s no mistaking that the economic impact of Americade will be felt this week at Schroon Lake.

On the eve of the nation’s largest gathering of bike enthusiasts assembling in and around Lake George this weekend, we heard from a number of Schroon Lake businesses about what this annual event means for the local economy.

“Americade does have an affect on Schroon Lake, all positive,” Myriam Friedman, owner of Morningstar Bistro told us.  “But if we had more updated lodgings there would be more of a positive affect because I think many Americaders seek the ambiance of a small town.”

Schroon Lake Bed and Breakfast owner Sharon Piper says she and her husband Mark are seeing an uptick in bookings as a direct result of Americade, with “Thursday and Friday nights sold out”.

“It's very important and a good way to start the season. It's a nice boost for us in a slow time between Memorial Day and July 4th,” Sharon said.

Northway Crash Update

Last week we reported on a rollover crash on the Northway on the eve of the Memorial Day Holiday where miraculously no one was hurt. In our report we mentioned one of the survivors of the crash was distraught over a missing cat, “Larry” who jumped from the wreck and ran into the woods. Since then we have been in contact with the daughter of the couple who shares with us an update on her parents and Larry:

They are both feeling better each day - no major injuries Thank God! We still haven't found Larry, but we've been up that way hiking a few days for a few hours at a time trying to find him. Thank you for helping them look for Larry - she's lost without him! If we find him or get any news I will definitely let you know.

There is a reward offered for Larry’s safe return in this Craigslist posting.

Stewart’s Ice Cream Recall Melts Profits

Schroon Lake’s Stewart’s was doing a brisk business last Memorial Day weekend, with seemingly no impact from their May 27 recall of  more than 100,000 gallons of ice-cream.  The ice-cream was recalled when Stewart’s discovered metal pieces broke off from a mixer blade during a recent production run. Company president Gary Dake says the recall would be expensive.  From The Business Review:

Dake said it cost about $500,000 to make the ice cream. “Obviously, there was a lot of labor associated with this,” Dake said. The company is calculating how much it spent in labor to collect, inventory and transport the ice cream.
