Schroon Lake: A Rockwellian Village?

Schroon Lake gets a lot of love with a glowing review in the Washington Beacon newspaper. Schroon is described by author Glenda Booth as “a Rockwellian Village” in her story about her summer adventures in the Adirondacks.

A couple of well known locals get a special mention: Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce legends Fran Willford “who has lived here 53 years, will brief you on many local visitor treats” and Laura Donaldson, “a living encyclopedia of local lore”. Laura's summer pontoon boat rides get a plug.

Two local eateries get raves: Pitkins “for a real down home meal” and Drake’s, for their top selling dessert, The Ticonderoga Bread Pudding, which “oozes with Drake’s  own warm whiskey sauce”

Lake Savers

If you ever want to give thanks for the precious jewel we all know and love as Schroon Lake, there’s one organization that you should be forever grateful to: The Schroon Lake Association. And this week the SLA was recognized as the organization of the year, by the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce.

The SLA -- which this year celebrates 100 years of service -- is the single reason we have our Lake today. The group came about when developers wanted to flood the area and make a dam. From the Chamber of Commerce:

The SLA is a very dedicated organization that helps to maintain the water quality of our lake, works to eradicate invasive plants and helps support the quality of life for those that live in Schroon Lake.  They worked so that the Schroon Lake Watershed Management Plan was developed to help protect the lake.

The Ones That Didn't Get Away...

On a  freezing cold, digit numbing day back in February, we had the pleasure of meeting two very enthusiastic fisherman on the frozen tundra that was Schroon Lake. As an unforgiving  bitter wind smacked us all in the face, the lads steeled themselves for the big catch, warmed by chilled beer and a handle of Canadian whiskey. They were more than happy to give our son a go at ice-fishing. While the brutal elements and uncooperative fish made for a lousy day, the boys have had some recent success, judging by this video.
