Creative Docking

With the water level in the Lake still too high for setting non-floating docks, we spotted some unusual ways folks are tethering their watercraft.  This method only works when there’s no chop and the Lake is calm. And if you find yourself missing pieces of your floating docks, or a swim platform, check with Schroon Lake Marina,  who are babysitting some pieces before their owners can claim them.

Beware of Schroon Lake Crocodiles…

From a distance, those floating logs we spotted Monday in the Lake sure looked like crocodiles. But instead of their bite, it’s their bump that should be a worry for boaters and jet skiers. Those floaters are just some of the detritus we came across, along with pieces of floating docks and branches of all shapes and sizes, washed from shore and up river by the recent round of weekend rain. A quick reconnaissance revealed most of the debris was confined to the northern half of the Lake. Have you come across anything interesting on the Lake in your travels? Tell us in comments.

Got Beer? You'll Need A Six Pack Of Commonsense

By Patty Steele

So, if I were the type of woman who bought beer for 17 year old boys, how would I go about it? Would I bring my own young children into a grocery store, along with Alex, the striking 17 year old son of my best friend, load up on groceries for 10 people, and then try to buy expensive imported beer to hand over to said 17 year old? That's what I was suspected of last weekend when I approached the check out at the Grand Union in Schroon Lake NY.

Northway Crash Snarls Traffic For Hours

In a split second last night, we watched as a tragedy was miraculously avoided, how life changed for two people and how folks came together to help others. It was also a valuable reminder  -- if we ever need one -- about how safety belts save lives.

At about 6.55 p.m last night just north of exit 23 on the 87 Northway, on a dry stretch of blacktop, I watched from the passenger seat of a friend’s SUV as a  large camper trailer pulled by a Toyota pickup truck began to swing violently from left to right. In the blur of a few seconds, the pickup truck and trailer  -- traveling in the right lane about 100 yards ahead of us -- flipped over several times over both lanes of traffic. We saw a small orange cat jump out of the shattered passenger side window.

The pickup came to rest upright on top the metal barrier with the flattened camper trailer taking up all of the right lane. Several motorists pulled over. In the moments that followed, time goes into an eerie slow motion state.  Two women and my son rushed over to the pickup truck to check on the occupants. They learned a female passenger had already exited the vehicle and went looking for that cat we had seen earlier, either being ejected or jumping from the window. We leaned another cat was trapped in the back of the cab.

Yum Yum Pancakes

What is it about pancakes. It's impossible to stop at just one. Sometimes a short stack of three isn't quite enough either. And by far, the best pancakes you can eat are the ones you don't have to cook. That's why you will find us and our out of town friends, heading over to the the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club this Sunday (May 29) for Cub Scout Pack 37's Annual Pancake Breakfast.

Adults are $6, Seniors, $5 and kids 12 and under $4. Immediate families are $25. Whether you are an early bird or prefer them for brunch, get there as early as 7 am and before noon and you will leave with a full belly, a smile and the satisfaction knowing you have helped a terrific cause. Are you planning on going? How many pancakes will you eat? Tells us in comments.
