Golf + Grill = A Good Cause For Grads

Mark your calendars now for the 10th Annual  Schroon LIONS Golf Tournament -- this Saturday June 18 -- – at the town course.

We can’t think of a better way to have a boat load of fun while helping to  raise funds for scholarships for graduating Schroon Lake High School students pursuing higher education. Besides a great day of golf  -- with some terrific cash prizes – we hear from Mark Whitney that the famous Lion Cook Shack is back.

"We’ll be pumping out the burgers, dogs, and sausages with peppers – and a good time should be had by all!"

More Rain In The Forecast -- Ya Gotta be Kiddin'

If it's Tuesday -- there must be rain in the forecast, right? Our slightly crappy weather continues today, but there are a few good days ahead. We are hoping that our wild and wet Spring will soon be over before Summer begins on June 21st, when we start complaining about how hot it is.

Fox On The Run

Live from the Critter CAM, a somewhat startled grey fox with a big bushy tail, gets his (or her) picture snapped last Friday night in backyard of the Schroon Lake Bed and Breakfast.

Owner Sharon Piper tells us she borrowed a friend's Bushnell Critter Camera to get the images.

"We had seen him in the yard previously but were never able to get a photo. I have no idea on how old he is, but he is a grey fox and is bigger than my 17lb Westie. We got a blurry photo of a raccoon too...it's amazing what is out in the backyard at night," Sharon said.

There’s another picture after the jump:

Band Jam Thank You Ma’am

Every Monday night, throughout the summer, be sure to check out the acoustic jam session that takes place in the Boat House.

From 7 pm to 10pm you can hear the sweet sounds of fiddles, guitars, drums, and tambourines – as well as some pretty crackin’ vocals – at least that was our experience when we stopped by last year. All are welcome, whether you prefer to sit on stage or the sidelines. Will we see you there this summer? For more info call 518 532-9259.

Own A Cone (or slice) of Schroon Lake History

As far back as the early 1970s, we hear the Narrows Restaurant on Route 9 served a couple of generations, good food, cool ice-cream and a great time. Behind the counter the hospitality of Elza and Howard Urban and their family and workers made hungry travelers, locals and tourists feel welcomed, as they devoured their famous hot dogs and pizza while enjoying a round of mini golf.

But nothing lasts forever and a few short years ago The Urbans moved to Arizona and new owners took over for a while, before calling it quits. Today and Sunday, you have the chance to own a piece of Narrows Restaurant history as the contents is put up for sale.  A Facebook tribute page has some terrific memories from fans and employees. Our favorite is from Don DeZalia Jr., who has a funny story about an unusual pizza.

I worked at the Narrows in 1971 when it first opened up. Remember Neil (Urban) creating a tuna fish pizza that was actually pretty good and can still remember Mrs Urban going over the paperwork with a bowlful of anchovies.
