When A Community Comes Together Great Things Can Happen

On Wednesday night around 150 folks gathered to break the bread and help raise money for a family who lost live stock and a barn in atragic fire.

The potluck event for John and Jen Otruba of Sugarbush Farms, raised $1,354. The money will go to purchasing livestock the family depends upon to survive, said one of the organizers, Shelby Davis.

"This meant the difference between the family having a business this year, or not," Shelby told Schroon Laker.

Among the dishes the diners feasted on at the Mountainside Gym were Anna Bently Hay's Chili Cheese and Rice Bake, Donna Mellan's vegetarian Mediterranean Gypsy Soup, Mr P's Meaty Beans and an upside down pineapple cake. "That cake was so delicious, everyone wants the recipe, but whoever baked it has not come forward".

It's Spring Tomorrow -- Really!!!

It's hard to imagine, but at 7:02 am Wednesday morning, Spring officially arrives in the Adirondacks. But don't tell that to any Schroon Laker who has cabin fever and was hopping for an early ice melt, the ground to thaw and the colors of Spring to be popping here anytime soon. No, the only folks pleased about Mother Nature's latest dump are the skiers, snow shoers, and riders of snow mobiles who now have several inches of the fresh, white stuff to play in. (And of course our much loved snow plowers, who keep our driveways clean and clear)

For those lucky enough to sneak off to Gore Mountain mid week -- not only will you have the mountain pretty much to yourselves, but a ton of fresh powder, which will still be around for the weekend crowds.

Massive Snow Storm Heading Our Way

A potentially dangerous storm that could dump between 8 and 16 inches on Schroon is expected to arrive here on Monday night and go through to Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for northern New York. From The National Weather Service:

The storm is a result of two storms which will bring blizzard conditions to parts of the Northern Plains and a wintry mix of precipitation into the Mid-Atlantic Sunday night through Monday. As one storm reaches the Atlantic, heavy snow is possible over upstate New York and parts of New England Monday night into Tuesday.

More from The National Weather Service after the jump:
