Pop Up St. Paddy's Day Gig Tonight!

A little leprechaun tells us that if you are in the mood for some classic Irish music, to cap off the St. Paddy's day weekend, then two locals will be doing an impromptu concert tonight at Flanagan's Pub!

The concert is being organized by Schroon's own leprechaun, who lives at the top of Severance Mountain. You can read about the legend of Schroon's leprechaun here.

Sailing To Nowhere

The sight of a sail boat tipped over on its side on frozen Schroon Lake has caught the eye of many this weekend, and left us all scratching our heads. The boat is about 500 yards south of the Town Dock. So how did the boat get there and what's its future?

By no means are we experts in "beached boats", but we are going out on a mast here and suggesting the vessel is one of those fast, racing boats, that skim across the ice, with a good wind in its sails. That assumption is based on a story we did last year on ice boat racing. In that report, reader and boater Bill Bernhard gave us a terrific history of ice boat racing:

They had their origin in the early 1900's as a working class boat for Bay Men on the Great South Bay of Long Island NY. What makes them unique compared to a typical Ice Boat is that they have no tiller or rudder. They are steered by trimming the Jib and Mainsail along with shifting the weight of the crew.

Schroon's Awesome Community Spirit

Community spirit makes Schroon awesome. We’ve witnessed it time and again when we hear about neighbors helping neighbors. And that spirit is front and center again after a devastating fire destroyed livestock and a barn owned by John and Jen Otruba of Sugarbush Farms.

The outpouring of community spirit is simply stunning. Within hours of the February 28th fire, folks rallied around John and Jen and their kids offering any assistance they could. In the days that followed Shelby Davis, of Mr. P’s Mountain Smokehouse and Shelby's Kitchen Therapy fame, got a group together to organize a pot luck fund raiser.

And last weekend, Beti and Larry Spangel felled four pine trees on their property, which later became ninety-two twelve foot 2 x 6 boards, which will be used for the rebuilding of John and Jen’s Barn. You can read all about Beti and Larry’s adventures on her 30 Acre Wood Blog here.

And you can also read the heart felt remembrance of the loss the Otruba’s suffered that fateful day in a beautifully written piece by Jennifer on her blog, titled, "We Had A Fire Today”
