We Can't Get Enough Of Our Unfrozen Lake!

For months, many of us have stared at a pristine white sheet of ice, dotted by fishing holes and huts, criss-crossed by the tracks of dozens of sleds. We even witnessed the bizarre sight of a sail boat turned on it's side. Then it turned several shades of grey, as the temperatures warmed, just before the ice out. So it's just darn right refreshing to see the true blue of the lake again -- this time in a beautiful picture taken by Sara Neary, from the east side looking west.

Mystery Boat On Schroon

Calling all Schroon sleuths. Schroon Laker Julie Sawyers has spotted a boat on the lake twice in recent days, trolling for something.

Writes Julie:

"It's hard to see, but does anyone know what this boat is and what they are trolling for? There is a float on each side of the boat, lots of fishing poles sticking up. I have seen it two days in a row now. This Whitney Bay on Schroon Lake.

Good Morning Paradox Lake!

Wow - what a way to start the day, courtesy of Danielle Swinton, who captured this stunning shot at around 8.30 am sitting on the stairs, down to the beach, from the Lake Pardox Club! The view is looking to the east. The image was captured with Danielle's Samsung smartphone.

Lost and Found: Mid April Edition

With the ice out and our Lake back to its unfrozen version -- it means that items that were perfectly content to be going nowhere on the frozen shoreline  -- find themselves freed up and ready for a little exploring. Thus is the case of one Grumman canoe:

"I found a capsized Grumman Aluminum Canoe out in the water this morning. I pulled it up on my ramp going down to the beach. If you know of anyone who lost their canoe, it is at 466 East Shore Road. Thanks, Carl."

And a former Schroon Laker from the class of 1980, is looking for some ld friends. Details, after the jump:

Curtain Won't Close on Schroon's Beloved Strand Theater

Story By Shelby Davis

I had a chance to talk with Liz and Larry McNamara, owners of The Strand Theater, this morning about some exciting news! But before the great news, you have to understand what Larry, Liz and other historic or small town theater owners have been going through in the past few years.

You've probably heard about the Hollywood studios' industry-wide conversion from 35 mm film to an all-digital product. For us movie-goers, it is supposed to mean a higher-quality movie, sound, and faster access to new releases. (I'm admittedly not a movie expert or critic, so bear with my novice jargon!).

The flip side of this transition is not so bright for independent theater owners; it means each theater, each screen really, needs to shell out about 100 grand for new equipment, electrical systems, ventilation systems, screens, and on and on. What are the odds that the owners of a small-town, historic, independent theater has tens of thousands of dollars just lying around for this exact occasion? About as likely as yours truly, a small town restaurant owner, having a few thousand in my rainy day fund. Yeah, not likely.

According to Liz, the threat of Hollywood going 100% digital has been floating around for the last decade or so. Someone would pop up with a deadline, but then nothing would happen. After many false starts, theater owners knew the threat was looming and started to make plans for conversion. Then last fall, theater owners got the news from Hollywood: go digital or go dark. Like right now. Like in the immediate 4-6 month foreseeable future.
