Brightening up a Dreary Schroon Saturday: Beads, Pirates and India

The weather is crazy: The snow is melting, the temperatures are rising and the lake looks like it's never gonna freeze over entirely! And all this is happening under grey skies. But there are plenty of bright spots on the horizon!

Starting today at 11 am to 1.30 pm there's a walk in Kids Crafts program at the Schroon Lake Public Library. Today's theme is a "Beaded Star". It's for kids aged 3 and up.

Then at 12.30pm, Pirates invade Schroon. Actually,  it's The Pirates: Band of Misfits movie, that will be playing in the downstairs meeting room in the Town Hall.

Schroon Sled Dog Race Officially Off Course

The Sled Dog Challenge Weekend – scheduled to bring hundreds of people to Schroon Lake in February, has been cancelled.

Organizers said a lack of funding was one of the reasons the event will not be held, said one of the organizers, Roger Friedman.

“There were also a couple of legal issues. We are confident all of these can be resolved before next year’s event.”

“We are very disappointed that the event has to be cancelled.”

Baby It's REALLY Cold Outside!!!

As of 9.30 am Thursday. Won't be too much longer 'til that lake of ours is FROZEN SOLID! How are you staying warm? Tell us in comments. In the meantime, here is the rest of our forecast from the National Weather Center. For Thursday: A 20 percent chance of light snow after 4pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 15. Wind chill values as low as -7. Light and variable wind.

• Tonight:  A 40 percent chance of light snow, mainly after 7pm. Cloudy, with a temperature rising to around 21 by 5am. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the evening. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

What a night -- what a party. Dozens enjoyed celebrating the end of a a wonderful 2012 at Schroon's Annual First Night celebration. From ADK Shakes and a sock hop at Schroon Lake Central School, to a festive bonfire  in the town park leading up to the fireworks, it was a night to remember.
