Getting More Than Just Books Out Of Your Library

Kids Crafts at Schroon Lake Library

With sub zero temperatures on many days so far this year  – there’s one place that’s been turning up the heat with endless activities: The Schroon Lake Library.

From free films for adults and kids, to computer training, to lessons on how to use your e-readers and ipads to check out e-books, as well as kids crafts and book groups, there’s no excuse to say there’s nothing to do.

And yet two more events has been added to the library’s busy calendar.

Starting this Thursday (January 31st) the library will offer free walk-in computer help every Thursday from 5:30pm  - 7:30 p.m.  Got a question about that new computer you got for the holidays, or how to use Word or Excel? Have no fear as the library will have it’s own genius bar of sorts, to help you out. The program runs until May 16th.

A Taste of Summer

A butterfly feasting at Schroon Lake's Community Garden in the Summer of 2012

It seems appropriate that on the eve of a day that is predicted to hit 50 degrees -- in the dead of winter -- that we might take this opportunity to revisit summer. And in particular our thoughts go the Schroon's own Community Garden, which now takes center stage on Main Street each summer -- smack dab, bang in the middle of town.

"Our second year was a huge success," organizer Sharon Piper told Schroon Laker.

"We gotta a grant, were able to buy hoses and tools. It really solidified our project, we were really able to put our stamp on it"

The bounty this year was incredible. Huge tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, herbs and beans, to name just a few of the delights that were grown. Topped off with flowers of all shapes and sizes, it was always a treat for the eyes.

And one of the highlights this past year was the 10 foot tall sun flower, which towered over the garden, appearing to keep watch.

Good Morning Schroon Lake

It's Sunday, and  the weather is relatively mild compared to last week's sub zero temps. Dozens of folks were out on the lake yesterday fishing and walking.

"We've been getting a lot of calls inquiring about the lake and the ice from folks," Rosemaire Ritson, from the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce told us.

"The colder the temperatures, the better it is for ice fishing."
