Happy 100th Birthday Schroon Lake Association

As we swam in the warm, crystal clear waters of Schroon Lake the other day, we marveled at how clean and healthy the lake is. Our sons snorkeled and saw several fish. Underfoot I stepped on a bed of muscles (the good kind). It was one of those days that you could see deep to the bottom of the lake near the shore.  A world away from the winter months when our daughter ice skates on the very same spot and those short days when we  watch those hearty souls bring up some fair size catches through holes in the ice. This place enriches us! We often say that there is something about that lake water that is simply rejuvenating and wonder why this piece of paradise is not like other lakes.

The simple answer, as we discovered a while back, can be attributed in part to the tireless efforts of the Schroon Lake Association (SLA). Today the association officially celebrates 100 years of keeping our lake healthy and pristine.

The Association came about in 1911, when several prominent locals heard about a proposal to dam Schroon, Paradox and Brant Lake and they didn’t want any part of it.

Schroon Lake's Big Arts Fair: Something For Everybody

More than 100 crafters and artists, from near and far --  and an almost perfect weather forecast  -- makes the 42nd Annual Schroon Lake Arts and Crafts Fair the place to be Saturday.

And did we mention the food, music, silent auction and ducks? (more about the ducks later) The fair, sponsored by the Schroon Lake Association, those terrific folks dedicated to preserving our piece of paradise, will be at its usual digs at the Town Park, starting at 10.00 am.

“There will be something for everybody... all the arts  are represented…jewelry, sculpture, woodwork, photography, painting, you name it, it will be at the fair,” Director Georgia Burkhardt told Schroon Laker.

“We have artists from Montreal, New York City and and a wicker furniture maker coming from Florida. And all of the local area artists from here and close by will be there”.

Disaster Strikes Schroon Lake: A Baby’s Cries Saves Four?

A hotel collapse in Schroon Lake?  Four people and a baby injured? 10,000 without power? That was the buzz on Twitter on Tuesday, as several Tweets gave graphic descriptions of the doom and gloom Schroon was dealing with after a “severe storm” ravaged our lakeside hamlet.

Except there was no hotel collapse or power outage or any injuries we know of that day (maybe a bad case of sun burn, perhaps)

Turns out the “Schroon Lake Disaster” was a lesson for graduate journalism students at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University. The students attended a faux news conference and using the power of the social media site Twitter, used 140 characters to get the news out.

“This was part of a class exercise for graduate students in our summer news reporting class,” teacher Jon Glass told us in a Tweet yesterday.

Amped Up Open Mic Night

Photo: Sharon Piper. The action at last week's jam session

Tonight at Witherbee’s it’s the weekly open mic night. Unlike the acoustic jam sessions at the Boat House each Monday, there’s a PA system ready for you to plug into, courtesy of Mark Piper, co-owner of the Schroon Lake Bed and Breakfast. Of course, acoustic instruments are also welcome.

Come on out tonight. We’ll be there having a frosty cold beverage, after we finish staining the deck!
