Mark Piper: A Man And His Music

We first met Mark Piper just after he and his wife Sharon opened up their Schroon Lake Bed and Breakfast back in 2009.

Little did we know that besides his skills in the kitchen, where he can whip up a killer breakfast, that he was a very talented singer and song writer. If you've seen him play the open mic at Witherbee's on Thursdays, you know what we mean. If you haven't  -- then check him out at his new "other" weekly gig every Saturday afternoon in the Town Park next to the Band Shell through the end of the summer.

Schroon Lake Locals Rock

At the last open mic at Witherbee's we were gobsmacked by the talent that this Thursday evening tradition attracts. Under the guidance of Mark Piper, who did a full hour himself, we heard a variety of performers play country, rock and a bit of blue grass. We also heard a very cool version of Aerosmith's "Dream On", performed by 15-year-old Erin Milsom. Erin was making her debut and she totally rocked it! She also performed the Rufus Wainwright song "Hallelujah", accompanied by her mom, Lesa Milsom.

There's a really nice vibe in the room (It's the upstairs bar area) and you feel like you are part of an intimate family gathering. Erin won't be there tonight  -- she's in Appalachia on a church a service project -- but we hear she will be back in August.

Thursdays. Witherbee's Carriage House, Route 9, 6 pm.

Inlaws Rock Schroon Lake

After a long, hot week, there’s nothing better than kicking back with an ice cold adult beverage, in air conditioned comfort, while listening to some kick butt country rock!

That’s why you should be at Witherbee’s tonight to see the Inlaws, one of the best country rock acts around.  Check out their video to get a taste of what this band is all about. The boys have been busy laying down tracks for a new album, featuring many of the songs you can hear tonight. 8 pm – 12 am.

Amped Up Open Mic Night

Photo: Sharon Piper. The action at last week's jam session

Tonight at Witherbee’s it’s the weekly open mic night. Unlike the acoustic jam sessions at the Boat House each Monday, there’s a PA system ready for you to plug into, courtesy of Mark Piper, co-owner of the Schroon Lake Bed and Breakfast. Of course, acoustic instruments are also welcome.

Come on out tonight. We’ll be there having a frosty cold beverage, after we finish staining the deck!

Got Steak?

We all had the craving. While we’d done our share of  burgers and chicken on the barbecue, we were all hanging for a juicy steak. Where could we be satiated?
