Schroon Lake’s Musical Summer

Doo Wop, jazz, folk and country are among the music acts featured in this year’s 2012 Schroon Lake Arts Council line up for the summer.

“We are very excited about this season,” Jack Osborne, one of the organizers told Schroon Laker today.

The SLAC will again sponsor the traditional Monday Night Boat House Acoustic Jam Sessions, and the 23rd Annual Adirondack Folk Music Festival. There are also two free performances for children.

The number of acts is down “ever so slightly” from last year due to a ten per cent budget cut from the town of Schroon. Those cuts impacted several organizations that depend on government grants.

But that has not dampened the enthusiasm of the SLAC to find and bring unique acts to our community.

“We go out of our way to broaden the scope of music we have here,” Jack said.

This season’s lineup reflects that mission statement, while bringing back a couple of favorites.

If you are into jazz, Bossa Nova and numbers from the great American Songbook, then get yourself over the The Boat House tonight, for the sweet and sultry sounds of Sonny and Perely.

The husband and wife duo, who will be playing with guest bass player Lew Scott, draw from the works of Berlin, Gershwin and Porter as well as the sexy sounds of Bossa Nova.

Sonny and Perley are in the middle of their summer tour, which has taken them through upstate New York and into Vermont and Connecticut.

8 pm @ The Boat House. Presented by The Schroon Lake Arts Council

Golden Oldies, Doo Wop in Schroon Tonight

Travel back in time tonight when the a cappella Doo Wop group Flipsydz perform golden oldies at the Boat House.

Flipsydz, (Flipsides) will bring a “a little bit of the Bronx”, to the lake, according to the Schroon Lake Arts Council, who organized the concert. The group, whose members include accomplished operatic singers, choral members and solo artists, will perform some of the best loved rock n roll songs from the 1950s and 1960s.

We are thinking fans of the Jersey Boys, will be right at home tonight. Showtime is at 8 pm in the BoatHouse – not under the street lights. For info call 518-532-9295.

Amped Up Open Mic Night

Photo: Sharon Piper. The action at last week's jam session

Tonight at Witherbee’s it’s the weekly open mic night. Unlike the acoustic jam sessions at the Boat House each Monday, there’s a PA system ready for you to plug into, courtesy of Mark Piper, co-owner of the Schroon Lake Bed and Breakfast. Of course, acoustic instruments are also welcome.

Come on out tonight. We’ll be there having a frosty cold beverage, after we finish staining the deck!
