Recycling: Easy In Schroon. Downstate: Not So Much

Ever notice how the new recycling machines at Grand Union resemble a robot face with two rabbitt eyes? We saw it the other day as we were returning a case of (one of) our new favorite summer beers: Blue Moon. We take for granted how easy it is being green here and pocketing a few nickels and dimes. But for some folks down state bottle and can returns are a huge deal  -- both in the number of returns and the lengths people  go to make a few dollars. According to a story in the New York Times, some recyclers make up to $400 a week returning bottles and cans. So great is the demand for returns some recyclers offer an extra penny. The article reveals that beverage makers actually pay 8.5 cents per return.

An Unforgettable View

What makes Schroon Lake such a terrific Adirondack experience is that it can become your “base camp” for multiple day trips. Today we begin a new series on the many experiences close by and far away, that’ll make you love the ADKs even more.

Go to Trips to learn from Michael van Winden about one memory building hike he did with his family, kids and their friends.

Wanna Hear A Great Yarn?

Well, there was lots of yarns shared and a lot of yarn spun yesterday, when women from as far away as Plattsburg, Willsboro, Schroon Lake, Loon Lake, Beaver Pond, Lake George, and Chestertown gathered for “Knitting in Public”.

Schroon Laker and knitter Julie Sawyers tells us it was a “wonderful afternoon” outside the Chester Yarn Boutique.

"Food and conversation and great weather made it a very enjoyable afternoon. The national “knit in public” day was in June, but it rained here".

Boathouse Sing-A-Long And More

What could be more of a Schroon Lake experience than a good old fashioned sing-a-along with that key summer ingredient: ice-cream!

And that’s just the beginning of what’s happening tonight at the Boat House starting at 7 pm, in what promises to be a not to be missed event.

There will also be a barbershop quartet, performances by Sue Tilotson, and the Sweet Adeline Singers, as well as appearances by some of the terrific instrumentalists that appear regularly at the Monday night Boat House Jam Sessions.

An ice-cream social follows. The event is sponsored by the Schroon-North Hudson Historical Society and while it’s a free event, they will happily take your donation.
