Go Justin

For many of us this weekend, our focus will be on one single event: The Super Bowl, in Indianapolis. For a hard core group from Schroon and North Hudson, their attention will be focused on the Empire Games in Lake Placid and the fortunes of local Justin Wachowski.

This weekend the Schroon Lake Senior will compete in several events at the Empire State Games as he continues his quest to make the US Olympic Team and the chance to compete in future Winter Olympics.

We first met Justin and his mom Sally and dad Dan over the summer. The family was fund raising to help pay for Justin’s training on the Luge Junior Development Team.

“He is very dedicated and nothing will stop him as he tries to make the Olympic Team,” Sally told us. “We are so proud of everything he is putting into this,” said Dan.

Sally proudly showed us photos and a video of Justin training on a road "slider" luge. Over the summer Justin spent hundreds of hours on conditioning and strength and weight training, to ensure he would be at the top of his game for this weekend and beyond.

For the passed few months Justin has been living at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid. He continues his studies at Schroon Lake Central online.

We will be rooting for Justin this weekend and hope you will be too. And if you’d like to make a donation to help cover Justine’s training and competition travel expenses – which he now pays for – visit his Facebook page

An Ode To Lowes...And A Hat Tip To Curtis Lumber

We would often joke when we went to the Lowes Hardware at Ticonderoga that the store looked like a Hollywood set, where the company might film their commercials.

That's because the store was like a scene from a movie, brightly lit, always pristine - where the floors actually sparkled. There appeared to be not a screw out of place. We were always helped by happy, smart and attentive employees.  (That's a far cry from other Lowes stores we've been to, as far south as Maryland and New Jersey, where it seemed like a hurricane had just passed through moments before our arrival, scattering products and making the staff disappear).

Election Heads Up

By Laura Donaldson

Elizabethtown  ( E'town ) as we all know it as our county seat. The Board of Elections is now sending out yellow registrations cards that should come to your home. Please check to make sure it has your correct spelling and address. Look to see what district you are in. A good rule of thumb has been South of the School is 2 and North of the school is district 1.

If you have married and changed your name, see if this is correct. If you have not received a yellow card call the elections office at 518-873-3474 and tell them. There are many reasons why you might have been put on an inactive list: because other cards didn't reach you or too much time has elapsed between voting!

Fixing any of these errors should be a simple fix now, but if you wait until you go to vote, there could be complications. Hope this helps everyone.

A Step Back In Time

Long before European settlers landed here, the Algonquian were one of the most populous and widespread native tribes, numbering in the hundreds. Today, hundreds of thousands of individuals identify with various Algonkian, (aka the Algonquian) peoples.

On Monday, their stories will come to life with Algonkian songs and stories, presented by Marge Bruchac and Justin Kennick. This husband and wife duo has performed together since 1994, offering a unique show featuring the history, songs and stories of the Algonkian Indians of New England.

The performance takes place today (Monday),  at 4pm at the Strand Theater. Presented by The Schroon-North Hudson Historical Society. Full details are here
