This Week In Schroon Lake History: 1837

On June 24th, 1837 – that’s 174 years ago  --  painter Thomas Cole visited Schroon Lake and made several drawings of the area, including what’s today known as Hoffman Mountain.

It was his second trip in two years and he was moved to return after observing in his journal: “The [Schroon] Lake I found to be a beautiful sheet of water, overshadowed by sloping hills clothed with heavy forests”.

Art historians say this is not just a pretty picture, but one in which Cole makes an anthropological observation. From The Adirondack Museum:

It not only depicts a known site and its inhabitants but also conveys Cole's reactions to civilization's transformation of the wilderness.

The Docks Are Back In Town

Just a few short weeks ago, the above scene didn't exist. That lush grass?  Under a good foot of water. Those town docks? Out of harm's way in the boat trailer parking lot. But as the near record lake levels finally receeded, life is returning to normal at the Town docks. It won't be long until the Town installs the other floating docks, but as you will see after the jump, many water front residents are not quite out of the water.

When the Wild West Lived on near Schroon...

Today, (Sunday) head on over to the opening of the Schroon-North Hudson Historical Museum, where you’ll discover a new exhibit on one of our favorite area attractions, the long shuttered  Frontier Town, where re-enactors once bought to life the wild west in an amusement park setting.

New exhibits will also feature Dr Phillip Sawyer and 150 Years: The Civil War. The day kicks off with music and refreshments at 12:30pm.

Although we never got to experience Frontier Town in its glory days, we’ve made a couple of  trips to the now ghost town like site.

Wandering around the many abandoned attractions had our imaginations running wild about how cool it must have been back in the day to be a kid and relive the wild west in the North Country. If you can't make it to the exhibit, you can learn about the amusement park's rich history here.

We can’t wait to see what Frontier Town goodies are on display,  as the only keepsakes around these days are on Ebay.
