Chris Gibson Talks Priorities at Schroon Lake Town Hall Meeting

On Wednesday, before a crowd of almost two dozen residents, freshman Congressman Chris Gibson out linned his top priorites: creating jobs, the deficit and small business growth. 

Town Supervisor Cathy Moses and Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward introduced the Congressman at the Schroon Lake Central School Auditorium as residents listened to the Congressman speak about the federal budget and hear their concerns.   

He discussed the need to remove barriers that people face in starting a business and the barriers they face in accessing capital to do so.  He felt more needed to be done to match potential small business owners with available funds.

Regarding the deficit, Gibson called for more fiscal responsibility and less partisanship.  He supports rolling back spending levels to what they were in 2008 and capping spending until the federal budget comes back into line.

Give Peas A Chance

A one time eyesore in the middle of town --  a weedy, vacant lot  -- has been turned into a glorious community garden.

The idea for the garden had been around for several years, but the seeds finally got sown when Sharon Piper, from the Town’s Tourism Destination Council was asked to identify areas that needed sprucing up.

"This is a fun way to bring the community together,” Sharon told Schroon Laker. Several hurdles had to be cleared  -- as well as a whole lot of weeds  -- on the lot between the Glens Falls Bank and the building where Higher Grounds and the Upstate Insurance Company call home.

“The property is owned by the bank and when I went to get  permission I asked them to ‘Give peas a chance.’

Almost Like Being in Love... In Schroon

It’s opening night for the 96^th season of Schroon Lake’s own Seagle Music Colony, with the premiere of the musical Brigadoon.

We'd like to offer a huge congrats to this year’s class of 32 emerging young artists  -- hand picked from across the US -- who will perform in the Colony's six productions over the summer.

Since early June these young performers have made their summer home at the Seagle Music Colony campus on Charley Hill Road.

Brigadoon tells the story of a mysterious village in Scotland that appears for only one day every hundred years. But things get turned upside down when two lost American tourists stumble upon the village on the eve of a wedding.

Songs from the musical, which made its debut on Broadway in 1947, “Like Almost Like Being in Love”  and “Once In The Highlands” are classics.

Talk About Jobs, Healthcare, Energy, Education And Our Two Wars With Chris Gibson

Schroon Lake will be the latest stop in a series of Town Hall meetings by freshman Congressman Chris Gibson tomorrow.

It’s the first time Gibson, a retired Army Colonel from Kinderbrook, has visited Schroon since campaigning here last fall and beating Democrat Scott Murphy.

“For the last six months, the congressman has wanted to make himself as accessible to as many people as possible,” his spokesman, Stephanie Valle told Schroon Laker. (With 137 towns in 10 counties in the congressman’s district, that’s a lot of folks to meet!).

Valle said the meetings – usually scheduled for two hours – go longer. “They are spirited discussions. There is no scripted agenda. There’s usually a few opening remarks and what gets talked about is at the sole discretion of the people.”

If you voted for Gibson is irrelevant. “If you disagree with him, he still wants to hear from you,” Valle said. Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward, (R)  - Willsboro and Schroon Town Supervisor Cathy Moses will also take questions.

Grandma's Paddle Boat Found! A Family Rejoices!

Grandma's Missing Paddle Boat  -- which we told you about over the weekend -- has been found!  We just learned from owner Tom Murphy that he found the paddle boat about 3/4 of a mile or so from his south Schroon home on the lake bank just south of the Old Scaroon Manor site.

"It had washed up on the shore and somehow managed to stay there," Tom told us.

The paddle boat -- owned by Tom but used almost exclusively by his mom and her grand kids --  had floated away from Tom's yard sometime in April, despite being tethered and way up on the shore, which you can see in the picture below.
