The Great Ice Cream Debate

We've made Stewart's Ice Cream converts of every single house guest that we've hosted in Schroon Lake. They all agree that it's addictively good deliciousness is fantastic for the taste buds, but a killer on the waist line.

In fact we almost had to have an intervention with one guest who went there every day (yes Steve Kushner, we are talking about you!). But the one thing we cannot agree on is what's the best flavor. We are happy to report that Stewart's have answered the question for us (The most popular flavor also happens to be my favorite!)

Play the video below to find out where your favorite flavor ranks. What's your favorite? Have you ever had to have a "Stewart's Intervention? Got another favorite area ice cream store?. Share with us in comments.

Schroon Lake Locals Rock

At the last open mic at Witherbee's we were gobsmacked by the talent that this Thursday evening tradition attracts. Under the guidance of Mark Piper, who did a full hour himself, we heard a variety of performers play country, rock and a bit of blue grass. We also heard a very cool version of Aerosmith's "Dream On", performed by 15-year-old Erin Milsom. Erin was making her debut and she totally rocked it! She also performed the Rufus Wainwright song "Hallelujah", accompanied by her mom, Lesa Milsom.

There's a really nice vibe in the room (It's the upstairs bar area) and you feel like you are part of an intimate family gathering. Erin won't be there tonight  -- she's in Appalachia on a church a service project -- but we hear she will be back in August.

Thursdays. Witherbee's Carriage House, Route 9, 6 pm.

A Fish Story For Kids

There's plenty of fish in the lake and this Saturday many will be hopefully landed by young anglers, at the 25th annual Kid's Fishing Derby.

This is one fun morning out for kids and their families made possible by the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Schroon Lake Fish & Game Club. It's open to all accompanied children age 12 and under. Prizes are awarded in multiple categories.  Organizer Joe Steiniger tells us that at last year's derby more than twenty rod and reel combos were awarded, along with tackle boxes and gear bags.

"All participants receive a goodie bag of fishing tackle, plus free hot dogs and refreshments.  Bait Worms are provided, compliments of Bobcat Sports," Joe said.

For information give Joe a call at 518 532 9768.

Saturday, July 30. Town Docks 9 am - 12 pm rain or shine.

Give The Gift Of Life

Today, Schroon Lake hosts a blood drive from 1 pm to 6 pm at the Word of Life Inn. The drive is being organized by our own Laura Donaldson, Schroon Lake Chamber Guru and owner of the Rocky Acres Inn.

"It's10 years today that my dear hubby John passed and we did an organ donation. He’s helping five people – let’s do your part and give blood," Laura tells us in an email.

So head on over, pay it forward and feel good about making a difference.
