Schroon’s Opening Weekend Getting Bigger

Schroon Lake’s Opening Weekend celebration over the Memorial Day Holiday just got a little bigger, with the addition of a Summer Expo in the Park, organizers announced today.

The expo will hopefully feature artists, crafters, local restaurants, business, farmers with produce and community groups, Shelby Davis, one of the organizers told Schroon Laker.

“This is a terrific way for local artists and business to get exposure early in the season,” Shelby said today.

The expo is in addition to the already announced festivities which include a  Blessing of the Boat Fleet,  a boat parade around the lake, a Memorial Service for Vets, a town wide garage sale and a Captain’s Dinner to be hosted at local restaurants.

“We originally planned to have a boat themed market and swap meet to coincide with our blessing of the boats. We still want to do that, but we wanted to open it up to other groups.”

Application forms for spaces at the expo are available to purchase from the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce, who are sponsoring the weekend. There are also application forms for those wishing to participate in the town wide garage sale. Participants will be be featured on a printed flyer distributed before the weekend.

Shelby said the response she has received since announcing the Opening Weekend has been very positive.

“Everyone I have been in touch with is very enthusiastic. The Town is behind us.”

Organizers are still trying to find a way to make a fireworks display part of the weekend’s celebration, without having to pay overtime for town employees.

“We are looking at a number of options. Nothing is confirmed yet.

There will be a meeting next Thursday, April 5 at 9 am at Mr. P’s Mountain Smokehouse for volunteers interested in helping plan the weekend.

Will you be going the Opening Weekend? What vendors would you like to see at the Summer Expo? Will you be taking a dip in the lake that weekend? Let us know in comments.
