Goin' At Gore

Picture Tele Racers, Courtesy Gore Mountain

The sun was blazing, the folks friendly and the trails rocked at Gore yesterday, on a very busy Sunday of the Presidents Day weekend holiday.

While the parking lots filled up early, the mountain was relatively un-crowded. Conditions did get a little icy late in the day.

We ate our lunch basking in the sun on the outside deck, just feet away from the open pit fire.

Meanwhle, some Tele racers took home skins, packs, poles, and other  backcountry gear from the Inside Edge of Queensbury in morning races.

Sixty six trails and 13 lifts will be open Monday. Will you be there?

Walkin' The Dogs

Who says taking the dogs for a walk has to be the same old, same old? Well, if you you are Julie Sawyers then it's just like skating on ice -- literally. Julie recently sent us this pic showing her and her dogs Gracie, Lily, Katie, and wrote us this note:

"Katie is a guest and they are all labs. No, their feet didn't freeze. The ice in Rockefeller Center couldn't have been smoother. The cool thing is that I could hear the lake rumbling under my feet and the ice was moaning and popping. The lake is alive in the dead of winter and in the dead of night!"

Ben Franklin Spotted in Schroon Lake

Ever wonder where your money goes? We don’t mean on all the things we buy, but rather after your buy them! Well, as we all know by now, there seems to be a website for everything, and so it should come as no surprise to learn there’s one that literally tracks the actual journey of our cold hard cash. And a Ben Franklin was recently identified here in Schroon Lake.

According to the Where’s George? website – which allows you to enter a bill’s serial number and follow its journey - a $100 bill that was first tracked in Sicklerville, NJ, on January 1, 2011, turned up in Schroon Lake on January 30, 2012.  From Where’s George?:

The bill has now travelled 291 miles in 1Yr, 28 days, 18 Hrs, 47 mins at an average of .74 miles per day. It is now 291 miles from its starting location.

The Schroon Laker who registered the bill posted on the website the note came from a bank. Got a strange tale to tell us about money? Share it in comments.

Ice Sailing On Schroon Lake

When our lake freezes over, we’ve seen fishing huts, cars, trucks and even a mini-bike on our fine lake – but never have we witnessed a sail boat doing some ice sailing. Thankfully, Tom Fallon had his camera at the ready when he captured the incredible sight above and below on a sunshine filled winter’s day. A boat, which Tom estimates was about 15 feet long --  with a main sail and jib and two sailors onboard  -- scooted on top of the lake near the Word Of Life Dock at about noon on Saturday.
