Schroon’s Opening Weekend Getting Bigger

Schroon Lake’s Opening Weekend celebration over the Memorial Day Holiday just got a little bigger, with the addition of a Summer Expo in the Park, organizers announced today.

The expo will hopefully feature artists, crafters, local restaurants, business, farmers with produce and community groups, Shelby Davis, one of the organizers told Schroon Laker.

“This is a terrific way for local artists and business to get exposure early in the season,” Shelby said today.

The expo is in addition to the already announced festivities which include a  Blessing of the Boat Fleet,  a boat parade around the lake, a Memorial Service for Vets, a town wide garage sale and a Captain’s Dinner to be hosted at local restaurants.

“We originally planned to have a boat themed market and swap meet to coincide with our blessing of the boats. We still want to do that, but we wanted to open it up to other groups.”

Schroon Lake’s Opening Weekend

A parade and blessing of boats, a Captain’s Dinner, a dock side nautical themed flea market, a town wide garage sale, topped off by fireworks, could all be part of a new annual tradition being planned to kick off the unofficial start of summer on Memorial Day.

The event is being billed as “Schroon Lake’s Opening Weekend” and is being sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

“We have our July 4th Parade and fireworks, our Labor Day celebration and fireworks, and we were looking at doing something to start the season,” Shelby Davis, restaurateur and one of the organizers, told Schroon Laker today.

Shelby said the idea for a blessing of the boats and parade was the idea of Sharon Piper, co-owner of the Schroon Lake Bed and Breakfast. “Full credit goes to Sharon. It’s a wonderful idea. We are now looking at ways to expand on it to make it a whole weekend event”.

The highlight of the weekend would be a Saturday parade of watercraft and blessing of the boats.

“This weekend is traditionally the first weekend, boat owners put their boats in”. Shelby hopes boaters would get into the spirit of the day by dressing up and decorating their water craft.

“We would then have a parade around the lake. We want to actively involve our other lakeside towns of Adirondack and Horicon so they will become part of the parade route.”

Enjoying Summer?

Photo Courtesy Schroon Lake Lions Club

Take one, good last look at the Lions Club “ Ice-Out -O-Meter Robot” (above), because this baby went swimming on Tuesday and will soon be packed away for next year's Ice Out Contest.

At around 2.50 pm on Tuesday, the Robot fell through the ice, Lion Roger Friedman told Schroon Laker today. Now, Lions Club members are going through the hundreds of entries to find a winner whose prediction matched the exact time of the "Ice Out".

With a predicted high temperature  of 78 – and large sections of the lake unfrozen – it’s just a matter of hours (or minutes) before all of the ice goes under.

Eye witness reports to Schroon Laker this morning  tell us the ice has totally melted south of The Narrows, with a lot of dark ice north to town, where large pools of icy cold water have been exposed for several days.

The warm summer like weather continues through tomorrow – with a high of 66, with temps expected to fall back to 50s for the weekend. Wherever you are, what are you doing on this spectacular day? Tell us in comments.

Hoffman Notch Fishing: Access For All

Don Sage, the President of the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club, is making a passionate plea to reopen to off road vehicles the old trials leading to the ponds of Bailey, Marion, Big and North.

In a letter to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, published on February 23, Sage says that opening the old roads in the Hoffman Notch area will not only allow sportsmen to have easier access, but will also make the NY DEC compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Hoffman Notch should be more accessible

To The editor:

Re: Hoffman unit access:

As the state Adirondack Park Agency and Department of Environmental Conservation look to expand the use of the Hoffman area, we, the sportsmen, request designated routes to the fishing ponds be opened for off-road vehicles. Roads already exist to these ponds: Bailey, Marion, Big and North. DEC policy of denying boats left at these ponds, forcing anglers to carry in and carry out each day, greatly reduces their time to fish. Early morning and late afternoon fishing will not be allowed as time must be spent lugging prams, rowboats, etc., back and forth, in and out daily. The establishing of a designated corridor following the old town roads for off-road vehicles will allow the anglers to spend more time enjoying their sport.

Catching A Laker

While many an experienced hand may be hoping to pull a prize fish out of the lake this weekend, it may not offer the same thrill as their first ice fishing catch.

So if you are not on the lake today -- and wanna share the sheer joy of what it’s like to pull up a laker  -- then we hope you enjoy the above video taken last month here in Schroon by a proud dad capturing his son’s first catch.

Enjoy. Got photos of this weekend's big Derby? Email them to us at Schroonlaker@me.com
