Getting Here From There

We recently posted about the bus option, of getting you or your guests to Schroon from New York City. If you prefer a scenic ride on a train, then here's a way from New York Penn Station that gets you as far as Ticonderoga.

The train is Amtrak train #69 Adirondack. The daily departure is at 8:15 am from Penn Station, arriving at Ticonderoga at 1:17 pm - a 5 hour and 2 minute ride on the same train. Typically the return trip is on Amtrak train #68  -- departs Ticonderoga at 2:33 pm and gets to NY at 8:40pm, a 6 hours 7 minute ride

The trip ranges from between $62 to $69 one way, depending on the day you travel. Caught this train? Tell us about it in comments.

You Know It’s Summer

Sunset Schroon Lake, Saturday, July 2, 2011

Despite this morning’s thunderclaps – and over all crappy forecast for today – Saturday was sure feeling like it’s the 4th of July weekend.

And you know the summer seasons has officially started when you see the following:

Renegade fire works light up the lake on July 2 (Nice show from the east side last night)

Folks not always giving way to pedestrians in cross walks (Yes, we are talking about you, Mrs Vermont Plates)

A packed to capacity Town Beach with swimmers being taken care of by our diligent life guards  (Shout out to Dan!)

Very cool looking Harley Davidsons parked neatly on Main Street

NYS Police enforcing the speed limit – A HUGE THANKS

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner

Right about now, the fine volunteer chefs from the Schroon Lake Community Church, (pictured above) have one thing on their mind: chicken – and lots of it.

On the eve of the July 4th weekend, the birds are being readied, the barbecues dusted off and the coals purchased before Monday’s 32nd Annual Chicken Barbecue.

"The 4th in Schroon just wouldn’t be the same without the smell of barbecue permeating the town’s air at 9:00 am," organizer Jonathan Belrose  told us.

The coals get fired up at the church at around 6:30am. For $9 you’ll get ½ a mouthwatering chicken, coleslaw, baked beans, a roll and a brownie with your choice of a drink. You can eat in at the church hall or get a take away box. This year the 50 or so volunteers hope to serve about 336 dinners. All proceeds go to support the Church’s various activities. What are you eating this weekend?

Monday, July 4th. Schroon Lake Community Church. 1086 Route 9 Between Leland and Dock Streets 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.
