Catch Of The Day

Jim Bohleber first fished Schroon Lake way back in 1979 while on vacation. He may not recall his first catch, but he definitely remembers his last – an 8 lb. 1 oz. lake trout, aka a “laker”. The fish measured 29 inches long. So how did Jim land this big boy? Jim told us via email:

“I caught it on a metal jig in about 60 ft of water. I did not eat it. I practice catch and release. Actually, catch, photograph, and release. The only fish I do eat are the ones that are legal size, that are not going to live. I think I ate 2 lakers all last season. The last time I saw this guy, he was headed back to the deep".

Jim didn’t do it all alone – his delightful wife Mary was on the net! Email us about your recent catches at schroonlaker@me.com

Heat Wave Update

We hear there was a run on fans at Curtis Hardware yesterday, Stewart’s ice cream was hopping (when isnt’t it?)  and Schroon’s air conditioned restaurants and pubs had plenty of takers.

How hot was it? Almost hot enough for Deb Philp to consider cancelling classes at True North Yoga. But one of those fans from Curtis Lumber did the trick.

The mercury hit 94 – with a heat index of well over 100. Today’s forecast is only a little better, so enjoy the cooler morning hours while you can. How do you stay cool? Tell us in comments.

Summer Shakes in Schroon

For the last month, the young actors of the ADK Shakes Company have worked long, long days and long, long nights, squeezed in a few hours sleep and the occasional yoga class as they studied their parts for today’s Schroon Lake premiere of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Today’s performance features one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. Its plot centers around the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and the Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta. Throw in the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of amateur actors, who are manipulated by fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set, and you’ve got a Shakespeare classic

Schroon Laker caught up with actor Collin McConnell (who's playing Demetrius) and asked about today’s performance.

"Are you kidding? I'm so excited! At this moment, the company is really ready for a good night's sleep. We've been working incredibly hard.

Beautiful voices at the Seagle Colony.

Larry opened the Strand.

No parking spaces on Main Street.

And someone is sitting on my bar stool at Flanagan's.
