Chris Westfall

Hard to believe, but there are still folks who are yet to discover the Adirondacks. And Chris Westfall – who is playing a concert at the Boat House Saturday night – is one of them.

“I am truly excited to journey to this scenic area of our great country!” Chris said. And Chris might have just earned himself an honorary ADK Ambassador title by encouraging out of area fans to come for the show.

“Please consider making a vacation out of it....the views are spectacular! One more reason to love your mountains!" We couldn’t agree more.

8 pm @ The Boathouse  Tickets: $12 Adults, $5 Students 518-532-9259.  Presented by the Schroon Lake Arts Council.

Scarce Sunshine

Ugg – looks like a mixed weather bag  is in store for us,. The sunniest time to get out today is between 10 am and 2 pm. There’s a high UV index of 8, so don’t forget to lather up. Let’s hope the weather Gods got it wrong.

A Boat Ride Through History

If you’re looking for a jump start into learning about Schroon Lake’s colorful and fabulous past -- and don’t feel like hitting the books --  then consider taking a boat tour to see and hear history come alive.

Twice a week the Chamber of Commerce hosts a pontoon boat ride, narrated by the very knowledgeable Laura Donaldson. We recently took a spin with Laura and learned a ton about this once very famous resort town.

The tour starts with Laura presenting the two theories of how the lake got its name, before an off shore look see where once grand hotels stood (before mysterious fires) There are some good yarns about some landmarks that are still standing.

Recycling: Easy In Schroon. Downstate: Not So Much

Ever notice how the new recycling machines at Grand Union resemble a robot face with two rabbitt eyes? We saw it the other day as we were returning a case of (one of) our new favorite summer beers: Blue Moon. We take for granted how easy it is being green here and pocketing a few nickels and dimes. But for some folks down state bottle and can returns are a huge deal  -- both in the number of returns and the lengths people  go to make a few dollars. According to a story in the New York Times, some recyclers make up to $400 a week returning bottles and cans. So great is the demand for returns some recyclers offer an extra penny. The article reveals that beverage makers actually pay 8.5 cents per return.
