The Passing Of A Schroon Lake Legend

Family Photo

Schroon Laker Raymond “Clifford” Rogers has died. The 75-year-old former inn keeper, business owner and local legend passed away unexpectedly Monday, April 30, 2012. He was surrounded by his loving family.

From The PostStar

He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of the late Pastor R. Clifford Rogers and Gretta Adams Rogers.

Cliff lived in Schroon Lake for more than 30 years. Before living in the Adirondack Mountains, Cliff and Phyllis lived in Saddle River, N.J., where he worked for RCA, Phillips Electronics and later Continental Electronic.

Cliff served in the U.S. Army, stationed at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. from 1960 to 1962.

The Rogers have had many businesses in the area, including, Great Northern Auto Parts and Silver Spruce Inn.

Cliff is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Phyllis Winder Rogers, his daughter, Dorothy Rogers (Daniel) Bullis of Saratoga Springs, his son, Raymond (Susan Barrett) Rogers III of Whitmore Lake, Mich.; his grandchildren, Andrew and Grant Bullis, Victoria, Katherine, Raymond IV (Ford), and Barrett Rogers; his siblings, Paul (Gwynne) Rogers of Jefferson City, Mo.; Margaret (Dr. John) Austin of Manlius, N.Y.; Mary Rogers of Eden Mills, Ontario, Canada.; mother-in-law, Dorothy Winder; and sisters-in-law, Doris (Edwin) Lindquist of Hulmeville, Pa., and Gail (Ron) Testa of Elizabethtown, N.Y.

Cliff touched many lives. He was not a rich man but he gave everything he had to help others. From the numerous exchange students and missionaries he supported to the advice he gave to people who asked, Cliff was always there. His selfless life and his complete integrity made him an inspiration to everyone around him. Whether as a gracious host of the Silver Spruce Inn, or mentor to his children and grandchildren, Cliff always made you feel important to him. His council was unique. He wouldn’t necessarily help you out of a problem; he would help you help yourself out of a problem. He would always end with, “Now who is in charge?” The answer being God.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday morning, May 4, at Mountainside Bible Chapel on Route 9, Exit 27, Schroon Lake. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at Edward L. Kelly Funeral Home, Schroon Lake, NY 12870. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Schroon Lake Emergency Squad or Partners in Evangelism International (KBBC Land Project) 5518 W. Diversey Ave., Chicago, IL 60639.
