Señor P’s

Mr. P’s is turning into a Mexican cantina for one night only with the next installment of their popular “pop up” restaurant themed evenings.

Next Wednesday there will not be any barbecue at the ol’ smokehouse – instead, chiles rellenos, shrimp ceviche and chicken fundido will be a few of the tantalizing dishes on offer.

And one of the dishes – the Chiles Rellenos con Picadillo, is inspired by a restaurant in Tucson, where chef Shelby Davis grew up.

“When we were thinking about the menu, I immediately thought about the great chiles rellenos I used to have at a restaurant called Mi Nidito, which translated means My Little Nest,” Shelby told Schroon Laker last weekend.

The dish features roasted poblano peppers stuffed with ground beef, tomatoes and cheese. The entire menu is gluten free and features many vegetarian options and delcious deserts. You can see the entire menu here and learn more about the event here.

To attend this private event  -- or place an order for takeout -- you must reserve in advance. The last two pop up events  --  featuring Indian and Thai --  were well attended.

“We’ve had folks who were familiar with those cuisines and folks that had never tried any of the dishes,” Shelby said. “It’s great seeing the reactions of the ‘newbies’

“It’s become a very social event. It’s mainly locals and everyone gets to see each other and catch up.”

Will you be going? Did you attend the Thai or Indian nights? Tell us about your experience in comments.

Where and When. Wednesday, January 23rd. From 5 pm – 8 pm. Pre-order deadline is this Sunday, January 20. Mr P's Mountain Smokehouse. 1106 Route 9  -- opposite the Grand Union  -- just up from The Strand Theater. (518) 532-4300

Curry In A Hurry: Spicing It Up In Schroon

Hot on the heels of Schroon’s first ever pop up restaurant   -- when Mr. P’s Mountain Smokehouse became a Thai Dining Palace – those creative chefs Shelby and Chris are once again shaking up taste buds with an Indian Night.

Simply put – this concept is amazing and Schroon is lucky to have such visionaries.

Joining in the kitchen will be globe trotting chef, Jennifer Gregory, a Schroon Laker who you will also find in the kitchen of the Copperfield In Resort in North Creek.

This coming Wednesday (October 24), the ol’ smokehouse will become a Taj Majal of sorts, when the flavors of Tandoori and various curries will waft down Main Street.

Chef Shelby shot us off an email to catch us up with how the big night is shaping up:

Plans for Indian night are going well.  Guest chef Jennifer Gregory will be joining us again to help in the kitchen, and we’ve made our shopping trek to the Asian & Indian supermarkets in Albany for authentic ingredients.

As with Thai night, we’re getting a good mix of people who have tried the cuisine before and know exactly what they would like, to a few adventurous souls who are sampling it for the first time.

Just so the chefs know how much food to prepare, it’s essential you place your orders in advance. You can check out the menu here and you must place your orders by Sunday, October 21st. Fore more info you can call 518 532-4300 or stop by Mr. P's this weekend.

Where and When: Wednesday, October 24, 2012. Mr P's Mountain Smokehouse. 1106 Route 9  -- opposite the Grand Union  -- just up from The Strand Theater. (518) 532-4300

Ever Had A Lions Steak?

Nick Batson, from Montclair New Jersey, chowing down at the 2012 Schroon Lake Lions Club Prime Rib Dinner

Right around this time last year we had just made our reservations for the Annual Lions Club Prime Rib dinner at Witherbee's Carriage House.

As relative newbies to Schroon, we had heard about this tradition but didn't quite know what to expect. Boy, were we in for a treat. This is one of those nights where you can catch up with just about anybody who is anybody in Schroon and surrounding towns. Flat landers even make it to the event!!!

And it's probably the tastiest $20 donation you can make to help out a terrific cause. Lions Club members not only are your waiters and waitresses, but they also lend a hand in the kitchen. Your $20 donation ($22 at the door) will get you a salad, dinner rolls, a slice of the juciest prime rib around and a dessert. It even includes the tip! And it's on this Saturday, October 20. So what are you waiting for? Call your nearest Lions Club memeber and get your ticket.

Where and When. Saturday, October 20, 5pm. Witherbee's Carriage House. 581  US Route 9, Schroon Lake. 518 532 9595

Schroon’s Taste Buds About To Be Rocked

What Chris Palmatier and Shelby Davis will be serving up next week is a long way from their barbecue roots. The couple will be dishing up one of our favorite cuisines: Thai Food, when they turn their smokehouse on Route 9 into a “pop up” restaurant.

A Pop Up what, you may ask? It’s when a restuarnt  -- for one night only --  does something very unique by having the kitchen turn out a very different faire than they are known for. And it’s gonna be Thai for Chris and Shelby’s first outing. (For fodis, the good news is that Chris and Shelby are planning more over the Fall and Winter).

If you have never tasted Thai we strongly suggest you place your orders -- and reservations – now, in advance of next Wednesday’s event.  For the uninitiated Shelby has produced this handy dandy guide to the Thai food expereince:

Thai food traditionally consists of fresh ingredients, prepared quickly, like in a wok. The flavors are layered and complex, and can be spicy. Thai food has been influenced by other Asian cultures, such as Chinese, Malaysia and Vietnam. Most Thai dishes incorporate three or four of the fundamental tastes like sweet, sour, salty or bitter, and are well balanced on the palate. Staple ingredients include rice or rice noodles, dark soy sauce, fish sauce, garlic, curry, lemon grass, cilantro, soybean, turmeric, lime and coconut milk. Sriracha sauce is an up-and-coming condiment, made from red chilies. Not a textbook explanation, but hopefully gives an idea of what to expect if you haven't tried Thai before!

So what are you waiting for? For all the details, check out Chris and Shelby’s pop up restaurant page here.

Where and When: Wednesday, September 26, 2012. Mr P's Mountain Smokehouse. 1106 Route 9  --  opposite the Grand Union  -- just up from The Strand Theater. (518) 532-4300
