North Country Braces For Sandy

Last August, a little hurricane named Irene left her mark on the greater Schroon area. Now, her cousin Sandy, is set to reek potential havoc on our area beginning Monday. The National Weather Service has released this warning:

HURRICANE SANDY WILL HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE NORTH COUNTRY...ESPECIALLY

DURING THE MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY TIME FRAME. BASED ON THE EXPECTED

TRACK OF HURRICANE SANDY...THE THREAT FOR STRONG WINDS DURING THE

MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY TIME PERIOD IS INCREASING. AT A MINIMUM EXPECT

BREEZY TO WINDY CONDITIONS...WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR STRONGER WINDS

ALONG THE WEST SLOPES OF THE GREEN MOUNTAINS AS SOUTHEAST WINDS MOVE

DOWNSLOPE AND ACCELERATE IN SPEED. THIS WOULD BE SUFFICIENT TO DOWN

TREES AND POWER LINES AND CAUSE POWER OUTAGES. ANY NORTHWARD SHIFT

IN WHERE HURRICANE SANDY MAKES LANDFALL WOULD RESULT IN A GREATER

THREAT OF EVEN STRONGER WINDS...AND THOSE WINDS WOULD IMPACT A MUCH

LARGER AREA OF THE NORTH COUNTRY. THIS SITUATION WILL BE CLOSELY

MONITORED. IN ADDITION TO THE WIND THREAT...RAINFALL WILL BECOME

HEAVY AT TIMES MONDAY NIGHT AND TUESDAY WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR 1

TO 3 INCHES OF RAIN. THIS WOULD RESULT IN RISES ON AREA WATERWAYS

AND INCREASE THE POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING.
